OUT OF THIS WORLD!: Starry-Eyed Hubble Celebrates 20 Years Of Awe And Discovery

Tomorrow, April 24, marks twenty years since the Hubble Space Telescope, with the help of he space shuttle and crew of STS-31 were launched to deploy the Hubble Space Telescope into a low Earth orbit, what took place afterwards is NOW HISTORY and part of the twenty years of EXCELLENCE for the Hubble Space Telescope.

From the Hubblesite: “At times Hubble’s starry odyssey played out like a space soap opera, with broken equipment, a bleary-eyed primary mirror, and even a space shuttle rescue/repair mission cancellation. But the ingenuity and dedication of Hubble scientists, engineers, and NASA astronauts have allowed the observatory to rebound time and time again. Its crisp vision continues to challenge scientists with exciting new surprises and to enthrall the public with ever more evocative color images.

NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) are celebrating Hubble’s journey of exploration with a stunning new picture, online educational activities, an opportunity for people to explore galaxies as armchair scientists, and an opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts to send in their own personal greetings to Hubble for posterity.”

The above shows how successful, if done right, the NASA space program. Despite plans to end the space shuttle program and budget cuts to NASA, the Hubble Space Telescope is a bright shinning star in the history of NASA.

Futhermore: “NASA is releasing today a brand new Hubble photo of a small portion of one of the largest seen star-birth regions in the galaxy, the Carina Nebula. Towers of cool hydrogen laced with dust rise from the wall of the nebula. The scene is reminiscent of Hubble’s classic “Pillars of Creation” photo from 1995, but is even more striking in appearance. The image captures the top of a three-light-year-tall pillar of gas and dust that is being eaten away by the brilliant light from nearby bright stars. The pillar is also being pushed apart from within, as infant stars buried inside it fire off jets of gas that can be seen streaming from towering peaks like arrows sailing through the air.”

When I had attended Catholic women’s retreats at Holy Family Retreat House, from time to time, a women with an extensive background in space science, would show some brilliant pictures taken by the Hubble. Truly they are out of this world.

  1. This was a beautiful presentation. Thanks to whomever put this together, it was so very much appreciated. What a miracle the universe is…and the photos show far and beyond the mystery and wonders yet to be discovered.I am in awe. Thanks again. And NASA-thank you for our dear Hubble! I am so glad she proved her namesake’s theory of expansion!!!! :^)
